When a Ceiling Fan Isn't the Right Answer

Let me be honest about one case where I'd skip it. If your garage sits directly below living space with no attic access, running a duct outside can be a nightmare. A high-velocity wall fan near the gable end is simpler, though less effective. And if you have a low ceiling, the fan housing might not fit in the joist cavity. Measure the depth before you buy. Avoid anything that needs more than 12 inches of clearance unless you're ready to build a soffit.

Installation Steps in Plain English

Install is doable in an afternoon. Cut a hole between the joists, mount the housing, and wire it to a switch or timer. Run the duct to an exterior wall cap. Before you close up the drywall, turn the fan on and feel for leaks around the duct connections. You want that air leaving the garage, not hiding in the ceiling. On a hot day, you'll notice a ten to fifteen degree drop at bench level within ten minutes.

Ducting and Termination

The duct run matters more than the fan brand. Use insulated flex duct rated for ventilation, and keep it as short and straight as possible. Every bend adds resistance and drops the effective CFM. If you have to turn, use a 45-degree elbow instead of a 90-degree when you can. The termination point should be a wall cap with a backdraft damper and a 1/4-inch mesh screen to keep birds and mice out. Seal every joint with UL-181 foil tape, not duct tape, and check the damper opens freely. I've seen fans where the damper was stuck closed by paint, turning a $300 fan into a $300 piece of ceiling art.
